Install 5.6 on XP Pro
« on: July 10, 2008, 01:03:45 pm »

I have recently upgrade my PC and now run XP Pro (previously Win 2000). In the past I have had regular Civilcad program crashes when in the Roads module. Now in XP Pro, I am able to do very little in the Roads module before the program crashes. More specifically, I am unable to edit cross sections. However, I am able to add IP's, and compute cross sections. I suspect a memory problem.

Previously I remember that in earlier versions of both Civilcad and Windows, that there were changes that could be made to one of the system files (config.sys??) to improve Civilcad stability.

I am interested to know if others are able to run 5.6 on XP Pro and not have program crashes while in the Road module. Suggestions to improve program stability would also be appreciated.

Check that the following two files exist (CONFIG.NT & AUTOEXEC.NT) that are located in your \Windows\System32 folder.

AUTOEXEC.NT should be ok but CONFIG.NT must have the following (as an example):-

the lines below will be at the end of this file..

dos=high, umb
device=%SystemRoot%\system32\himem.sys
files=100

Also in Civilcad, go to SYSTEM / FILE UTIL and SYSTEM SETUP and change the "SPEED" for "Survey" and "Plotting" both to 40.

Then exit & restart civilcad 5 and go to SYSTEM / DOS PROMPT and enter MEM

The important thing is the "largest executable program size" - should be 475k and above.

I have 5.72 as well on my system that is running XP PRO and it is
